Policies and procedures need to be implemented to address the specifics of each program population. A lack of awareness of our profession hurts us all. Recently I went to a licensing board hearing on a complaint against a fellow social worker. One of the major factors in the complaint was that she had provided parenting advice via email. While the advice was appropriate and good, the State's expert witness, a licensed clinical social worker, claimed that email communication FOR ANY PURPOSE OTHER THAN SCHEDULING APPOINTMENTS was unethical. The administrative law judge is not a social worker and had no reason not to believe this expert witness. The social worker in question ended up with her license on probation primarily based on this simple email exchange.

Lesson? Proceed with caution, and continue to educate our licensing boards and the established licensed professionals they use as expert witnesses.Laurie Heikkenenhttp://www.counselorsfriend.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7018364702492617143.post-70789754017444361012013-04-13T00:05:34.839-04:002013-04-13T00:05:34.839-04:00Thank you, Stephen!
